Maine Partners for Cool Communities Reaches Out to the "The County"
Last week Maine Partners for Cool Communities (MPCC) reached out to Aroostook County
communities with a series of Cool Forums. As University of Maine Presque Isle (UMPI)
President, Donald Zillman, remarked in his welcome at the Cool Forum in Presque
Isle, many important projects such as UMPI's wind turbine installation have begun
with a handful of people with passion and a vision of what could be. Other Cool
Forums were held last week in Houlton and Fort Kent.
A highlight of these forums was a taped video interview by Paul Santomenna, Physicians
for Social Responsibility Director and MPCC partner, of John Brautigam, Director
of the Energy Programs Division of the Maine Public Utilities Commission. Brautigam
discussed the new municipal grants and resources available through Efficiency Maine.
MPCC hopes to continue to link Aroostook County communities, including municipal
government organizations and citizens, with the tools necessary to boost energy/taxpayer
dollar savings. The upcoming Cool Congress at UMPI will also provide an opportunity
to connect with others around the state who are working on energy concerns in their
communities. The Cool Congress will give all attendees the opportunity to learn
from national and state experts what can be done to make a difference, create clean
energy jobs, save money and energy, and reduce green house gas emissions.

Portland Heads Towards Sustainability
Recently Portland's Sustainability Committee announced a new program that follows
the advise of a performance contractor. The program will use nearly $500,000 in
federal stimulus money to hire the city's first full-time "sustainability coordinator"
and invest in energy-efficiency improvements.
After an energy audit of 55 buildings, not including the Portland International
Jetport which was not part of the audit, the city will now take steps to reduce
the roughly $8 million a year it spends on energy. Fifteen million dollars worth
of energy conservation improvements would reduce Portland's carbon dioxide emissions
by more than 5,000 tons a year - the equivalent of taking 933 cars off the road
with an estimated savings of nearly $1.5 million a year.

Offshore Wind Energy Meetings to be Held Across the State
The State Planning office and the Department of Conservation have scheduled public
meetings regarding the siting of Maine coastal deepwater, offshore wind. Legislation
passed early this year called for between one and five demonstration sites along
the Maine coast where offshore wind technology can be tested. Meetings will be
held in Ellsworth, Machias, Wiscasset, Wells and Rockport.

Maine Cities Turn off Streetlights: Saving Energy and Money
Street lights in the US generate greenhouse gases equal to 2 million cars and cost about $1.3 billion in electricity each year. This figure has cities and towns in Maine asking if we really need this much light and when and where do we need it. South Portland is turning off 112 lights, saving them $20,000 a year. A Sierra Club - Maine grant is helping an intern in Yarmouth determine the need and placement of the street lights in their town. Lewiston is reviewing their street light policy while Bangor plans to convert street lights in the downtown area from conventional to LED.
