SENIORS: ACCOMPLISHMENTS

- Senior Centers open to all the KEYS residents:
* Senior Center in York (1978)
* Senior Center in S. Berwick (1996)
* New Senior Center for Wells/Ogunquit (2004) - Formation of the Senior Leadership Coalition (SLC) with CWC and York Housing leadership (1997) & leadership assumed by SMAA (2003 and ongoing)
- SLC and York Hospital create and disseminate resource lists for each town (2003)
- Senior Theater Group (Milt Davis)
- SMAA Family Caregiver Support Program mini-grants help to establish a support group for grandparents raising grandchildren, education for people assisting a loved one with dementia, support groups for family caregivers of older adults, family caregiver education
- SMAA brings A Matter of Balance to the KEYS area (2005) -A partnership between SMAA, York Hospital, York County YMCA and others to recruit and train volunteers to become coaches that can teach the “Matter of Balance” falls management program for elders. The Matter of Balance Program teaches elders about risks of falls and shows them how to reduce their risk of falling.
- York Hospital creates a position for a senior friend (advocate) (2004)
- YCCAC and York Hospital (1997) provide transportation for seniors, for health care and (YCCAC) shopping.
- South Berwick offers volunteer transportation (2003).
- York Hospital organizes program in which youth help seniors with shopping. (2003)
- Our first $enior$ense Americorps*VISTA for the KEYS area, housed at Landmark Hill in Kittery (2005)
- Education and assistance is offered to older adults for Medicare D prescription benefits (2005), through partnerships with SMAA, York Hospital, and CWC.
