Community Indicators

What "numbers" can we use to measure progress toward our vision and goals? The following have been proposed as indicators of senior well-being in our region. For more information, and to see larger maps, click here.

Percentage of Seniors 65 and older in our region (2000 Census)

Ogunquit: 30%  York and Wells 17%  Portsmouth 16%

Kittery 15%  Eliot 12%  S. Berwick 8%

NUMBERS WE'D LIKE TO MAKE AVAILABLE HERE:

Seniors are Valued: Seniors living in poverty by town

# & % seniors living in poverty by town (Include total # seniors in each town)

Senior Services are Available and Utilized:

# calls to 211, SMAA, and YCCAC requesting senior services

# & % of seniors receiving General Assistance, fuel assistance, tax abatement, home repair assistance, etc.

Seniors are helped to live at home : Meals on Wheels

# meals on wheels by town by year

Seniors live productive lives: volunteering and employment

# volunteer hours contributed by seniors, as recorded by United Way Volunteer Centers

# seniors in work force

CITIZENS SAY...

“senior” is not a monolith – really several generations with changing needs

It's All Connected

Community Life – seniors are great volunteers and they vote at higher rates than younger people

Economy – the decline in population of young workers is a concern

Housing – seniors should have a voice in the "affordable housing" discussions

Youth – mentoring and intergenerational programs are beneficial for both seniors and youths
