Details

  1. New Places and Spaces for Artists: Several new places and spaces for artists to create, perform and give lessons have been created in the KEYS region in last 10 years:

The SPACE (Space for Performing Arts and Cultural Exchange) is an arts and cultural facility providing the community with a diverse offering of classes, events and performances. Under the direction of Drika Overton, it is home of the annual Portsmouth Percussive Dance Festival (PPDF).

The SPACE opened in February 2005 and offers ongoing classes that reflect the vision of the annual PPDF, an internationally recognized festival created in 1995.

The SPACE is also available to rent for classes, rehearsals, and performances.

    • Sanctuary Arts — Art School & Sculpture Center, 117 Bolt Hill Road, Eliot, www.sanctuaryarts.org,  It is the goal of Sanctuary Arts to be a real sanctuary — with active, dynamic classes and beautiful grounds and spaces for dreaming and creating!

    • Art on the Hill – former Wentworth Dennet School - 78 Government Street, Kittery.  The building houses a number of artists including painters, musicians, photographers and sculptors.

  2. Agamenticus Arts & Heritage Directory was published in 2001 and is a listing of the growing network of artists, craftsmen, writers, actors, directors, dancers, musicians, historians, librarians, educators, business people and community builders, living and/or working in South Berwick, Eliot, Kittery, York, and Ogunquit.   The goal of this publication is to identify our region's cultural and artistic resources for the purpose of building stronger, healthier, and more vibrant community, where people and organizations connect and support one another.

  3. Maine Recs. and Parks Association Conference attended each year representatives from the Recreation Departments in Kittery, Eliot, York and South Berwick attend the Maine Recreation and Parks Association Conference to collect ideas for new and improved programming.
  4. A listserve of all interested artists, craftsmen, writers, actors, directors, dancers, musicians, historians, librarians, educators, business people and community builders has been developed in response to the need to enhance communication that was discussed at the Our Future By Design Community Forum in 2005.
  5. Choose To Be Healthy Day is a summer one-day event for children and youth in the Kittery, Eliot, York, South Berwick and Lebanon recreation programs, during which they join forces to learn about healthy eating and exercise habits while having fun playing games.  It is an event sponsored by York Hospital's Choose to be Healthy program and area Recreation Departments.
